Delightful Dining in Colombo 7: A Review of Tilapia Colombo
Colombo 7 boasts a vibrant culinary scene, and with so many exciting options, exploring new restaurants is always a treat. Recently, after feeling the post-festive squeeze (yikes!), I decided to meet my best friend for a budget-friendly meal. Knowing our love for a good glass of wine, we opted for a BYOB restaurant in the heart of Colombo 7.
Our choice landed on Tilapia Colombo, conveniently located within walking distance from both our workplaces at the race course in Colombo 7. Their BYOB policy extends to wine, beer and spirits, with a corkage fee of Rs. 300 per bottle of wine and Rs. 65 per large bottle of beer. We found this very reasonable, allowing us to indulge in three bottles for the evening.
To take advantage of the early bird specials, we arrived at 5 pm. They offer a menu with two courses for Rs. 1650 or three for Rs. 2050. Naturally, I couldn’t resist adding dessert to complete the experience.
The restaurant itself is charming and intimate, and it was bustling upon our arrival – a promising sign. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, with no pressure to rush our decisions. Upon arrival, the staff promptly stowed our wine in the fridge to keep it chilled. They also provided fresh glasses and an ice bucket, even offering a new ice bucket without prompting when we switched to prosecco, showcasing their attentiveness to detail.
Now, onto the food! Having recently discovered a newfound love for goat cheese, I had to try the “Goat Cheese Spring Rolls” for starters. They were divine! The filo pastry was light and crispy, encasing a cloud-like goat cheese filling. The accompanying sweet chili sauce and fresh side salad perfectly complemented the dish.
For my main course, I opted for the “Glazed Pork Belly.” The succulent meat was paired beautifully with creamy mashed potatoes, honey-glazed parsnips, and raisins, all bathed in a flavorful jus made from roasting juices and cider-soaked raisins. It’s safe to say I savored every bite, leaving a clean plate and a satisfied stomach.
Despite feeling pleasantly full, I couldn’t resist the “Sticky Toffee Pudding” for dessert. Served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a generous drizzle of toffee sauce, it was undeniably delightful. While it satisfied my sweet tooth, I’ve had slightly better puddings in my dessert adventures.
Overall, the highlight of the experience, aside from the delicious food, was the exceptional staff. Their attentiveness, warmth, and hospitality were unmatched. They ensured our wine remained chilled throughout the evening and promptly addressed any questions we had about the menu. While our table was reserved for a later seating, we were graciously offered the option to move to a private room to finish our last bottle of wine. When the expected booking didn’t arrive, they even apologized for the initial inconvenience and welcomed us back inside.
In conclusion, I highly recommend Tilapia Colombo! It offers a delightful combination of delicious food, excellent service, and a cozy ambiance, making it a perfect choice for a budget-friendly and enjoyable evening out.
